The Law Changed in 2022 — In Your Favor
Following the ruling in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, the U.S. Supreme Court eliminated the mandate to demonstrate a "special need" for handgun permits. Residents now possess a protected right to seek concealed carry licenses without proving extraordinary circumstances.
While New York introduced updated criteria—including interviews, vetting, and training—the era of arbitrary rejections for lacking "proper cause" has ended. Individuals previously rejected under the former restrictive standards may now be eligible to reapply for their licenses through the new process.
